Manilal Nag
Manilal Nag comes from a family of musicians linked to the "Vishnupur Gharana," believed to be around 300 years old. He was born in 1939 in Bankura District, West Bengal, India. His grandfather, Govinda Chandra Nag, and great-grandfather, Bauridas Nag, were both notable sitar players. Manilal began learning the sitar at age 5 from his father, Late Shri Gokul Nag, an accomplished musician known as "Sangeetcharya." He had the chance to learn from many legendary musicians, including Ustad Allauddin Khan, Pt Kanthe Maharaj, and Ustad Amir Khan.
He learned from various legendary musicians to succeed. Pandit Manilal Nag debuted in the All India Music Conference in 1953, performing with Pt Samta Prasad on Tabla. As a top-grade artist, he has frequently performed on Akashvani and Doordarshan and has participated in the National Programme of Music and Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan since 1954. A popular concert artist in India, he regularly performs at music conferences both in India and abroad. He has taken part in numerous International Music Festivals and concerts in the U.K., USA, Canada, Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, Japan, Fiji Islands, Nepal, and more. He has served as an expert member on the Central Audition Board of Prasar Bharati in New Delhi, the University Grants Commission, and the West Bengal Akademi of Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts. He has also taught at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata for several years.
He won the Sangeet Natak Akademy Award in 2001 for his work in Indian Classical Music. He received a Senior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture in 2005 and an Honorary Gold Medal from the Asiatic Society in Kolkata in 2008. As a teacher, he trained over 1000 students, many of whom now work at Akashvani and various universities. He was also a faculty member at the Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata and has released several cassettes and CDs with different music companies.
