Deepak Ram is a skilled artist known for his powerful performances in North Indian (Hindustani) classical music. He excels in collaborating with musicians from other genres, creating innovative compositions, and teaching. Deepak's passion lies in North Indian classical music, where he shines as a soloist. His performances are captivating, showcasing both technical skill and personal charm. He has performed in the USA, South Africa, India, UK, Ireland, France, Austria, Germany, Lebanon, Turkey, Taiwan, and Holland, and has had the honor of performing alongside his teacher, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, in Geneva, London, and Paris.

Deepak started his training in bansuri and tabla with Sri Jeram Bhana in South Africa in 1975. Two years later, he moved to Mumbai, India, to learn flute from the late Sri Suryakant Limaye, a master flute maker, while also studying briefly with flautist Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao. In 1981, he fulfilled his dream by becoming a disciple of the famous flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, with whom he still studies periodically. During this time, he also learned tabla under Sri Yashwant Padhye and music theory and voice from Pandit Rajaram Shukla. Deepak earned a Master’s degree in Music from Rhodes University, South Africa, in 1996, with his thesis titled “Exploring Syncretism Between Indian and Western Music Through Composition.”

Deepak showcases his versatility through many collaborations with musicians from different genres. He has performed with jazz pianists Darius Brubeck and Bheki Mseleku, Tunisian oud player Dhafer Youssef, and the South African band Tananas. On January 1, 2000, he performed with South African artists Sibongile Khumalo and Rwandan singer Cecile at the Millennium Concert on Robben Island, attended by Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki. Deepak has released 9 solo albums and contributed to over 60 albums as a session musician. His bansuri features in several movie soundtracks, including “The Fast And The Furious,” “Matrix Revolutions,” “India, Kingdom of the Tiger,” “Stealth,” and “Before The Rains.”
